K/PACEDC-Reding’s Gravel and Excavating Acquires Edwards Contracting, Opens Storm Lake Office
Algona-based Reding’s Gravel and Excavating (RGE), one of the area’s leading providers of general excavating, site preparation, underground utility construction, custom crushing and farm drainage services, completed its acquisition of Edwards Contracting of Hampton, Iowa. Edwards Contracting is one of the few providers specializing in subdrain installation along highways and interstates throughout Iowa and the Midwest. The acquisition was effective the first of the year.
Edwards Contracting specializes in the installation of subdrainage systems along highways and interstates to control water below and beside the roadway. With the acquisition of Edwards’ specialized equipment and experienced personnel, RGE is able to diversify its services and expand to include large-scale, DOT subdrain projects.
“Without even realizing it, many drivers travel safely on Iowa’s roads thanks to work performed by Edwards Contracting and our crews,” says Katie Besch, RGE Treasurer. “One of our next big projects will be installing the subdrains along the Holstein-to-Correctionville stretch of new Highway 20.”
Additionally, with the closure of Lundell Construction, Reding’s Gravel and Excavating opened an office in Storm Lake, Iowa, that will continue to operate out of the former Lundell location. RGE also purchased Lundell’s crush yard and gravel pit in Storm Lake.
RGE’s Hampton office will operate as Edwards Contracting, a Division of Reding’s Gravel and Excavating, and the Storm Lake operation will function as a satellite location, providing excavating, site preparation, material sales and hauling, as well as gravel and crushing services in Northwest Iowa.
The acquisition and expansion allows for additional resources and personnel from the Algona, Storm Lake and Hampton locations to better serve RGE’s customers throughout the region.
“We became aware of the Edwards and Lundell Construction opportunities at about the same time,” says Besch. “The previous owners were looking to get out for different reasons, we recognized the voids created if these communities were to lose these long-time employers and saw it as a great opportunity to expand our reach into new markets and specialty services.”
Not only does RGE’s acquisition and expansion maintain the jobs that keep these communities vibrant and successful, they plan to substantially increase their workforce company wide.
“All the operations will remain in their current locations, and we are currently hiring in Algona and for the Edwards’ crew in Hampton,” says company President Chuck Reding. “All said, we will probably be doubling our workforce to somewhere around 55 to 60 employees when we fill the open positions.”
Reding’s Gravel and Excavating was established by Delmer Reding in 1948 as a general excavating and underground utility contractor. Over the years, RGE expanded its services to include farm drainage and custom crushing. RGE is currently helmed by Chuck Reding and the family’s third generation, his children John Reding and Katie Besch.
